Cooper facing bribery charges
Entrepreneur Brad Cooper will stand trial on 13 charges arising from his dealings with collapsed insurance giant HIH.
Six of the charges relate to alleged bribery of former HIH Financial Services Manager Bill Howard, while the rest relate to almost $14 million in payments facilitated by Mr Howard in the last months of HIH.
Mr Howard has admitted to lying under oath during the HIH Royal Commission about taking money from Mr Cooper, and in a formal two-day interview with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). Mr Cooper is alleged to have paid at least $119,000 in a deal to recoup money he claimed was owed to him by HIH.
When ASIC first questioned Mr Howard, he reportedly said the only offer was for him to become COO at HIH.
Mr Cooper’s previous bail conditions have been carried forward. He is to appear in the NSW Supreme Court on a date to be fixed.
