Consumer law centre demands full take-up of flood inquiry findings

The Consumer Action Law Centre wants the next government to press the insurance industry over recommendations made by the parliamentary inquiry into the 2022 floods.

The probe’s final report, issued last year, made 86 recommendations, but the Insurance Council of Australia has not accepted them all.

This month, ICA released an action plan including responses to remaining recommendations from the floods inquiry and a separate code of practice review. The plan came after ICA released an initial response to 78 of the 187 recommendations arising from both reviews.

The Consumer Action Law Centre says the 2022 floods “laid bare a number of systemic issues within the insurance industry, exposing serious shortcomings in how insurers treat consumers experiencing vulnerability, and how they handle claims.

“The final report from the parliamentary inquiry … provides a clear road map as to how insurers can lift their standards and rebuild consumer trust in the industry.

“The next government must ensure insurers have accepted all the recommendations contained in the report and implement changes in their practices as soon as possible.”
