Claims trickle in after wild weather in Tasmania

Insurers have escaped massive payouts after wild weather struck Tasmania last week.

Storms hit the south and north-west of the state, felling trees and damaging roofs.

RACT Insurance CEO Trent Sayers told insuranceNEWS.com.au around 500 claims have been lodged at an estimated cost of between $600,000 and $650,000.

“There will still be some follow-through in terms of the tail of some of the claims, and we’ve still got a raft of estimates on some of these claims that we’re eagerly seeking to update,” he said. “But we’re not expecting it to be as fierce as we’ve experienced with previous events.”

An AAMI spokesman told insuranceNEWS.com.au last week that the insurer has processed 200 claims at an estimated cost of $400,000.

He says claims are still coming in but continuing power outages in the area have restricted claims processing.

Mr Sayers says the damage has predominantly been to homes, with some minor claims recorded for vehicle damage – 60% of its claims coming from Hobart and the other 40% from the north-west coast.
