Claims pour in after storms and floods

Insurers have received about 2500 claims for storm and flood damage across Victoria, SA and NSW, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) says.

Wet weather is expected to continue in some of the affected areas this week.

“ICA and its members continue to monitor the situation and remain patched in to each state’s emergency management arrangements,” a spokesman told insuranceNEWS.com.au.

In Victoria heavy rainfall has swollen rivers in the state’s central, west and northern regions, and caused landslides on the Great Ocean Road.

The Bureau of Meteorology has flood warnings in place for a number of rivers, and has predicted further rain this week in Victoria and southern NSW.

Daily September rainfall records were broken in SA last week. The NSW northeast has received a drenching this month and prolonged flooding has continued in the state’s inland regions.

The wet start to spring has followed unusually high rainfall over the winter months.

Nationally, rainfall was 45% above average last month and 61% above average in July, according to the bureau.
