Car thefts rise

The number of motor vehicle thefts increased 6% last year compared with 2011, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Police recorded 58,574 incidents, according to ABS National Centre for Crime and Justice Statistics Director Brad Petry.

He says thefts have grown 7% since 2010, “with most vehicles stolen from either a residential location or on a street or footpath”.
