Bushfires raze more WA homes as hot weather continues

Severe fire danger weather has continued in WA after more homes were destroyed in the past few days as blazes were ignited by lightning.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services reported 68 new incidents in just two hours on Friday following an intense series of lightning strikes, with many in the Great Southern region.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm confirmed several properties had been lost amid conditions so severe that winds tore roofs off some homes near the fires.

“We are aware of one house lost in Jerramungup and two in Hopetoun, where we are investigating another three destroyed buildings to ascertain if they were residential properties,” he said.

A number of bushfire advice warnings remained in place today, including in the shires of Lake Grace, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Denmark.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting possible showers or storms today ahead of hot and dry weather for the remainder of the week across much of the south west.
