Bushfires inquiry wraps up
The Victorian Government has been slammed in the final week of the Bushfires Royal Commission. The royal commission has now adjourned to prepare its interim recommendations after two months of hearings.
Premier John Brumby was last week forced to defend himself from allegations the Government has pre-empted the royal commission’s findings by announcing changes to its bushfire policy that had not been raised at the inquiry.
These include township protection plans and neighbourhood safe places.
Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority Chairman Christine Nixon says registered properties have been cleared two months ahead of schedule.
Nearly 3000 properties – or 96.7% – have now been cleared, with the remaining 100 delayed for “emotional reasons” or because the owner is overseas.
