Bushfires death toll set at 210
The death toll from the Victorian bushfires in February has been set at 210.
State Coroner Jennifer Coates announced on Friday that the search for victims is now complete, with police saying they are “comfortable” all human remains from the bushfire-affected areas have been located.
She says the identification process is complex and in some cases identification will not be possible. In fact, only 66 of the 210 dead have so far been positively identified.
“We must work to the legal standards of our system to ensure that misidentification does not occur,” Justice Coates said in a statement.
The insurance industry’s latest figures remain unchanged from March 12, when the Insurance Council said all but 10% of 9105 claims, worth a total $1.12 billion, had been processed.
