Brakes applied to car theft during recession
Car thefts over the past financial year fell by 11% since 2007/08 – the largest decrease since 2005.
According to the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council, the 51,315 thefts last year were 6000 fewer than the year before, while recoveries remained stable at 76%.
The NT and ACT are the only areas to have seen an increase. Thefts in SA and Victoria decreased by 16% and 14% respectively while NSW and WA both experienced decreases of 13%.
Motorcycle theft has also decreased 4%.
