'Below average' cyclone season finishes
Australia’s cyclone season finished on April 30, with Bureau of Meteorology officials confirming it as “below average”.
Seven cyclones were recorded in the region, with four coastal crossings. None were declared insurance catastrophes. A typical season sees 11 cyclones hit the region.
No cyclones have been recorded since Tropical Cyclone Gretel, which crossed the northern tropical coast of Australia as a tropical low on March 10.
In February Severe Tropical Cyclone Damien crossed the WA coast near Dampier and Karratha as a category three system, knocking over trees and causing some damage to buildings.
