Asbestos claims get another $40 million

The Federal Government allocated $40 million in the Budget to settle damages claims from wharfies with asbestos-related diseases.

The waterside workers contracted the disease through breathing in deadly fibres while loading asbestos in the 1950s and ’60s. The Government has settled 159 out of 220 cases received from the former wharfies, but up to 1000 more victims are expected to still come forward.
