April storm payouts mount amid 'staggering' run of losses

Three extreme weather events since late December have led to a "staggering" $1.6 billion of insured damage across NSW, Queensland and Victoria, according to the Insurance Council of Australia.

The total was revealed last Friday when ICA reported that the April 3-8 storms in NSW had caused $176 million of insured damage from 14,781 claims.

These losses followed the Christmas storms, which on December 23-29 hit all three eastern states and racked up $1.24 billion in insured damage, and the Valentine’s Day storms, which left about 530,000 Victorian homes without power and cost $196 million.

The April storms mostly hit the Hawkesbury-Nepean and Illawarra regions. "Insurers have been on the ground in impacted communities and have since paid out $10 million to ... customers," ICA said on Friday.

More than 95% of the April claims are for property damage. There are 13,959 claims for home building and contents, motor and "other personal", and 822 for commercial property.
