Zurich launches women’s health benefit

Zurich has introduced a corporate income protection benefit for women’s health conditions.

It says the Women’s Health Benefit is part of its “refreshed” corporate care income protection product and is payable to women on behalf of their employers if they experience ectopic pregnancy; hyperemesis gravidarum; pre-term birth, stillbirth or neonatal mortality; endometriosis; premenstrual dysphoric disorder; or menopause.

“As a first for Australia, this new benefit is an important step in the journey to improving support and recognition of women’s health and ensuring those experiencing these health issues receive the protection they need,” head of group insurance Darren Wickham said.

“It is widely acknowledged that women’s health conditions are under-researched and misunderstood. This gap extends to many workplaces, where women experiencing these conditions are facing productivity and career impacts, and in some cases discrimination and isolation.”

Zurich says a survey of almost 800 women nationwide found about two-thirds experienced conditions such as menstrual disorders, and 80% of those had decreased productivity at work and home; 60% required significant time off work to manage symptoms.

Nearly 70% of the women did not inform their employer of their health conditions due to concerns over discrimination or lack of support. Of those who did disclose their conditions, one in three had experienced discrimination or bias, particularly those working in healthcare, social welfare or education sectors.
