TAL claims managers, leaders gain mental health coaching

TAL is introducing mental health coaching programs to help claims managers assist clients, and to enhance management skills within the company.

It says the programs are based on best-practice approaches outlined by mental health foundation SuperFriend, which is supported by superannuation funds and group insurers.

“The training for our claims managers uses a framework that highlights the need for empathy and understanding, and language that focuses on the strengths and efforts of the person on claim as they navigate their way back to wellness,” TAL GM Claims Loraine van Eeden said.

All claims teams will receive the training, followed by coaching to refine skills.

The “people leaders” management training program will be mandatory over the next six months.

“We understand it’s not always easy to have sensitive conversations around mental health in the workplace,” TAL Head of Mental Health Glenn Baird said.

“This practical program will help our people identify when support is needed, how and when to have discussions with their teams, and give them resources to support them in their roles.”
