NSW adviser takes AFA’s top award

Darren Johns from Align Financial in NSW has been named the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) adviser of the year.

AFA CEO Brad Fox says the award recognises Mr Johns’ exceptional client relationships and his demonstration that people can achieve wellbeing, financial security and lifestyle outcomes while still working.

Henderson Maxwell was named practice of the year at the association’s conference in Canberra last week. The Sydney-based practice is run by founder and CEO Sam Henderson and GM Tony Davison.

Mr Fox says the diversified financial services practice provides a complete experience for clients, successfully leveraging Mr Henderson’s media profile to attract and educate a broad demographic of customers.

“The judging process for the AFA adviser of the year and the AFA practice of the year awards is deliberately rigorous,” Mr Fox said. “We have to be convinced that the winners are genuinely outstanding on a number of fronts.”

Erin Truscott of Brisbane-based GCA Financial was named this year’s rising star.

Mr Fox says Ms Truscott “demonstrates exceptional capabilities in all areas”.

“She aims to not only deliver service to her clients that helps improve their financial situation, but also helps improve their peace of mind and hence their lifestyle and wellbeing.”

The excellence in education award winner is Steve Nielsen of Brisbane-based Ascent Wealth Management.

AFA GM Member Services Nick Hakes says Mr Nielsen excels across all criteria.

“It is clear he has invested, during a long period of time, in a wide range of education programs that demonstrably enhance the quality of advice Mr Nielsen delivers to his clients,” Mr Hakes said.

“He has thought outside the square in terms of education, embracing not only traditional academic study but also practical business knowledge and emotional intelligence.”

The adviser of the year and practice of the year awards are sponsored by Zurich Life & Investments. ANZ Wealth sponsors the rising star category, while Asteron Life sponsors the education award.
