MetLife moves to ease menopause impacts on financial, mental health
A MetLife survey has detailed the financial and emotional toll of menopause, prompting the insurer to launch a pilot support program for customers.
The survey found one-quarter of 1058 women and non-binary respondents aged 35-64 experienced menopause symptoms that affected their emotional, mental and physical health. About 50% have made changes such as diet and sleep adjustments to manage the symptoms.
Respondents said their careers have also been affected. About 32% have made changes such as working fewer hours, switching occupations or stepping down from leadership positions.
One-third have used up their leave balances because of menopause and, in the most extreme cases, about 14% have prematurely left the workforce.
“Menopause is not just a women’s issue,” MetLife chief customer and marketing officer Lina Saliba said. “With women having to make tough career decisions, such as retiring early, menopause is impacting their financial situation now and into the future, meaning that families, workplaces and society are all affected by menopause, due to the reduced economic and social contribution of women.”
Metlife says its pilot program is designed to offer personalised support to customers experiencing perimenopause and menopause symptoms.
It provides access to a one-on-one consultation with a female nurse who can help with symptom identification and management, and give advice on medical help.
After the pilot, the program will be available to all customers and will complement the insurer’s 360Health services.
