Life peak body hires policy, advocacy directors

The Council of Australian Life Insurers (CALI) has added to its executive team with two new appointments.

Benjamin Marshan is joining as Director of Policy and Industry Affairs and Michael Johnston as Director of Policy and Advocacy. They will start on March 27.

Mr Marshan is presently GM Policy and Advocacy at the Financial Planning Association (FPA), according to his LinkedIn page.

CALI says he has “deep knowledge of the complex regulatory environment” that its members operate in.

He has played a critical role leading the financial advice industry’s fintech agenda and the development and implementation of the FPA’s Code of Professional Practice, Guidance and Regulations and development of Professional and Ethical Standards for Financial Planners, CALI says.

Mr Johnston is a senior financial services leader with more than 20 years’ experience in public policy, government relations and industry affairs.

He has worked on a wide range of regulatory issues affecting the financial services sector and led the corporate affairs strategy for Westpac’s response to the Hayne royal commission, CALI says.
