Government pushes financial literacy among Aboriginals
The Federal Government wants to improve financial literacy among indigenous people.
Superannuation Minister Nick Sherry says the Government is meeting with indigenous leaders and service providers to understand the needs of the communities.
“The Government has set a target of closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous employment within the next decade – and improving financial literacy is critical to achieving and sustaining that goal,” he said.
On visits to Darwin and Cairns last week Senator Sherry also highlighted problems with lost superannuation accounts. In Darwin 41,268 residents have lost super accounts totalling $88.7 million, while in Cairns 45,322 people are missing $75.2 million.
