FPA urges unis to offer financial planning programs
The Financial Planning Association (FPA) wants universities in Tasmania, SA and WA to work with it to develop programs that meet new industry education standards.
They are the only states that do not offer financial planning degrees or subjects.
Revenue and Financial Services Minister Kelly O’Dwyer announced the new education standards in April. Since then the FPA and Financial Planning Education Council (FPEC) have been helping universities develop flexible degree programs based on the FPEC curriculum.
The deadlines for compliance with the standards are January 1 2019 for new financial planners and January 1 2024 for established planners.
FPA CEO Dante De Gori says that overall he is “thrilled” with the universities’ response, with many already presenting bachelor and masters degrees for FPEC approval.
“The positive response we’ve received from universities… so far is testament to the growth and importance of financial planning as a profession in this country,” he said.
Mr De Gori says while Tasmania, SA and WA lag behind, the FPA will continue working with the education council to develop courses in every state.
FPEC Chairman Mark Brimble says the new standards will help strengthen the profession.
