Consumers aware of life underinsurance

Australians know they do not have enough life insurance, with three in 10 lacking personal cover, research conducted for TAL shows.

Among 1200 people questioned on awareness of life, trauma, disability and income cover, an average score of 24 was recorded on an index of financial protection, where 100 would be full insurance.

TAL MD Jim Minto says he is surprised at the low score, given the increase in life cover through superannuation.

“While most Australians have some form of life insurance through super, some people are simply not aware of it, while many do not know if the types and level of life insurance cover they have are adequate.”

He says people with mortgages and children in the 34-49 age group have the greatest awareness of life insurance.
