Australian still smiling in face of crisis

Australians working in financial services are still confident in their jobs despite growing economic uncertainty.

A survey by international recruiter Robert Half has found 66% of Australian accounting and finance professionals feel just as or more secure in their jobs than they did a year ago compared with 37% in Japan, 38% in Ireland and 51% in the UK.

But the financial crisis is still weighing on many Australians’ minds, with 63% of companies listing the global downturn as their greatest concern – still lower than Ireland (91%), the UK  (80%), and Spain (79%).

Robert Half Asia Pacific MD David Jones says the results show Australian professionals are more optimistic than those around the world.

“This does not mean they believe they’re unrealistic or immune to global economic conditions, but reflects the overall picture of a market that hasn’t yet seen the same impact of the downturn on employment figures as other parts of the world,” he said.

NZ, Dubai and the Netherlands are the only countries to surpass Australia on confidence – 69% of New Zealanders feel as or more secure in their jobs despite the country going into recession this year.
