ANZ Wealth CEO resigns suddenly

In a surprise move, ANZ Wealth CEO John Van Der Wielen has resigned to return to the UK to become MD International of Friends Life.

He will be responsible for all the group’s international operations including its German distribution partner, Lombard, and AmLife in Malaysia.

Mr Van Der Wielen joined ANZ in July last year from the UK where he was MD of Clerical Medical, Halifax Life and European Financial Services at Lloyds Bank.

ANZ Wealth General Manager Insurance Gavin Pearce will become acting CEO for the business.

Mr Pearce joined ANZ as part the acquisition of the remaining 51% stake of ING Australia in November 2009.

ANZ CEO Australia Phil Chronican admitted it was a disappointment Mr Van Der Wielen is leaving.

“He has bought together the previously separate wealth businesses to form ANZ Wealth covering more than 3500 staff, 2.5 million customers and the second largest network of financial advisers in Australia,” Mr Chronican said.

Mr Van Der Wielen will stay with ANZ in the near future to help with the transition of the role before moving to London later this year.
