Adviser banned for ‘one-size-fits-all’ insurance approach
A Westpac adviser has been banned for eight years for over-insuring clients.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) says Anthony Bishop of the inner Brisbane suburb of Chelmer delivered inappropriate advice and in one case failed to issue a written statement of advice.
He was an employee of Westpac Financial Consultants from July 2010 to April 2014.
ASIC says he implemented a “one-size-fits-all” advice strategy, meaning some clients were over-insured with inappropriate premiums.
Westpac initiated a customer remediation process and 29 former clients were paid a total of $1.1 million for advice fees, premium refunds and market losses relating to investments.
A BT Financial Group spokesman says the business supports the ban after reporting Mr Bishop to the regulator in April 2014.
“BT detected a number of issues surrounding the advice and compliance of Mr Bishop and immediately took action,” the Westpac division says. “BT conducted a thorough review process of Mr Bishop’s files at the time and has fully compensated all affected clients.”
