US told to prepare for big, big losses
The US could face insured losses of $US100 billion ($133 billion) in a single year from catastrophic events in the near future, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III).
Chief economist Robert Hartwig says the cost of property catastrophe reinsurance is projected to rise 25% this year. In hurricane-prone areas, rates could rise as much as fourfold.
Dr Hartwig says with the expectation of more and stronger hurricanes making landfall in coming years, and increased population in coastal areas, hurricanes causing at least $US50 billion ($67 billion) in damages will become more common.
Dr Hartwig will lead the III from January 1 after current III President Gordon Stewart retires.
