US flood program stumbles

The troubled US National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) reauthorisation could stumble at the final hurdle as the Senate puts its decision on hold.

Despite less than six weeks remaining until the September 30 deadline to extend the program, the reauthorisation has stalled with the Senate going into an early recess.

A push for an interim extension until December has also been rejected after the Republican Party blocked the move.

Although the revised legislation for the NFIP has already jumped a number of hurdles including passing through Congress, it still needs the final Senate approval.

If it is passed by the Senate, the program will be extended for another five years and include a number of improvements to improve its financial stability while reducing the burden on taxpayers.
