US, Europe financial firms to cut 175,000 jobs

Thousands of jobs may be lost in the US and Europe as the world’s biggest financial firms shed workers amid slowing revenue growth and billion-dollar writedowns.

New York-based recruiting firm Gerson Group predicts 175,000 jobs could be cut by this time next year.

The company says financial companies have already announced plans to trim more than 83,000 jobs since last July, with the worst “yet to come”.
