UK’s top car insurer cuts 800 staff as online uptake grows

London-based motor insurer Direct Line is cutting 800 jobs as its customers increasingly embrace online options.

Direct Line is the UK’s largest motor insurer with 11,000 employees and brands Churchill, Green Flag and Privilege. It says the job cuts reflect “changing customer behaviour where people are increasingly opting to interact with us digitally”.

In November Direct Line said it plans to lower expenses by 20% by the end of 2023 to be competitive, using automation and process improvement as well as “self-service and digitalisation”.
