Terrorism pool to ‘quickly resolve’ Manchester claims

UK terrorism reinsurer Pool Re says it plans to rapidly respond to any claims from the suicide bombing in Manchester last week.

The blast, after a concert at the Manchester Arena, killed 22 people and injured more than 100. Britain’s official terrorism threat level was raised to “critical” the day after the bombing.

“Pool Re will work with its members in resolving any claim arising from the attack as quickly as possible,” the group says on its website.

“We will make a further statement as more information becomes available.”

The Manchester bombing was the deadliest terrorism incident in the country since 2005, when 56 people died in attacks on London public transport during a morning rush hour.

Earlier this year a man drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, leading to the death of six people including the driver.

Weimeng Yeo, a terrorism risk-modelling specialist at catastrophe risk management group RMS, says most plots against the West have been orchestrated by individuals acting independently.

“Without external assistance and support, most of these plots have been amateurish, with the terrorists limited to knives, small arms or vehicles used to ram crowds – as in the recent attack outside the UK Parliament,” Mr Yeo said.

“However, the bombing at the Manchester concert shows a level of sophistication that is unmatched in recent home-grown attacks in the UK.”
