Storm Nadia losses estimate tops $400 million
Windstorm Nadia, which swept across Scotland, Northern Europe and Germany in January, has caused insurance property losses of €272 million ($413 million) based on an initial estimate, Zurich-based catastrophe data company Perils says.
Nadia, also known as Malik, formed off the US east coast, moved across the North Atlantic and affected regions in Europe on January 29 and 30.
“Most of the losses occurred in Germany which experienced more than half of the total industry loss,” Perils says.
Despite very strong winds, losses in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the UK remained comparatively modest. Nadia also affected the Netherlands and Austria, where impacts were limited, and Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which are not covered by Perils.
An updated estimate of the market loss from Nadia will be made available on April 30, marking three months after the event end date.
Nadia was followed by a series of storms in mid-February, which Perils says it will report on separately.
