St Paul asbestos payout causes high earnings loss
US insurer The St Paul is continuing to struggle in the face of massive claims following – but not confined to – September 11. Now its exposure to asbestos liabilities is affecting its ability to recover.
A $709 million asbestos settlement – on a policy written more than 40 years ago – has seen The St Paul reporting a net loss of $435 million in the second quarter, compared with earnings of $194 million a year ago.
