Same industry, same number of letters: Aon replaces AIG
Aon is taking over sponsorship of English soccer team Manchester United after AIG earlier announced it will not renew its contract with the club.
The international brokerage’s brand will feature on the jerseys of the world’s biggest soccer club for four years from next year.
Troubled US insurer AIG had come under fire over its £56.5 million ($115 million) shirt sponsorship deal because its corporate rebranding is unlikely to happen before the next season, meaning it has wasted money on a dying brand.
There had been speculation that Indian financial conglomerate Sahara would take over the sponsorship.
Aon CEO Greg Case says the group is delighted the brand will be showcased to Manchester’s 330 million fans and the countless other soccer followers around the world.
