Earthquakes dominated the global natural catastrophe count in April, according to the latest report from Aon Benfield subsidiary Impact Forecasting.
A magnitude-6.6 quake struck China’s Sichuan province, killing at least 196 people and causing estimated economic losses of $US27 billion ($26.36 billion).
Insured losses were about $US250 million ($244.12 million), according to Impact’s monthly Global Catastrophe Recap.
Two strong earthquakes struck Iran, with officials reporting economic damage of $US600 million ($585.88 million). Quakes were also recorded in Japan, Afghanistan and Hungary.
The US fared better following spates of April tornadoes in recent years.
There were 83 tornadoes last month, down 60% from 206 in April last year and 89% lower than the record 758 in April 2011.
Meanwhile, floods across the Nelson and Bay of Plenty regions of New Zealand will cost insurers $NZ16.8 million ($13.88 million), the Insurance Council of New Zealand says.
