People dithering over cyber risk

Individuals remain unprepared for cyber attacks despite an increasing number of incidents, warns Chubb.

The global insurer’s latest Cyber Risk Survey finds 86% of respondents are concerned about attacks, but most either underestimate or are “completely unaware” of common cyber threats.

Only 12% are concerned about risks associated with using public WiFi, despite this being a common entry point for cyber criminals.

And only 4% highlight concerns with smart home-connected devices, despite the fact these devices “can serve as gateways” for criminals looking to access other personal information.

“In this day and age, anyone is susceptible to falling victim of a cyber attack,” Division President of Chubb North America Personal Risk Services Fran O’Brien said.

“While it is promising that so many people are generally aware of everyday cyber risks our study shows that their concern isn’t translating into action – just 40% of individuals use cyber security software and less than one in three regularly change online passwords.

“Given what’s at stake, individuals should be taking every precaution they can to mitigate risk.”

Successful individuals and families should be particularly aware, Chubb says.

“As a group, successful individuals are more likely to be business owners or senior business executives with access to confidential client and employee information, proprietary intellectual property, and other sensitive information that could spell disaster if stolen or leaked.”
