Normal Atlantic hurricane season forecast

This year’s Atlantic hurricane season should feature a normal level of storm activity, according to Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project.

Researchers predict 12 storms will develop in the Atlantic basin this year, with six expected to develop into hurricanes.

The average level of activity is 5.9 hurricanes, incorporating 2.3 intense storms. The Atlantic hurricane season extends from June 1 to November 30.

The researchers earlier predicted a slightly above-average season but have revised that projection citing cooling sea temperatures in the tropical Atlantic.

“Cooler waters are associated with the dynamic and thermodynamic factors that are less conducive for an active Atlantic hurricane season,” they said.
