New mobile technology to cut driver distraction
US insurers are promoting new technology in a bid to cut down on car crashes caused by a menacing minority – drivers using mobile phones.
A Canadian software company has developed the technology, which prevents drivers being distracted by their ringing mobiles.
DriveAssist software by Aegis Mobility lets the caller know that the person they are trying to reach can’t answer the phone or text message. An over-ride function still allows emergency calls to get through.
US-based Nationwide Mutual Insurance has offered users of the software a discount of between 3-10%.
International studies have found the risk of an accident is four times greater when driving and talking on a mobile phone, even when using hands-free.
