Nate causes blackouts after Mississippi landfall

Hurricane Nate made its second landfall this morning (AEDT) near Biloxi, Mississippi, as a Category 1 storm, after first crossing the coast hitting near the mouth of the Mississippi River the day before.

It reportedly knocked out power to 67,000 homes across the US Gulf Coast, mostly in Alabama.

Catastrophe modeller AIR Worldwide says reported structural damage has been limited.

Nate, which has now been downgraded to a tropical depression, continues to move inland but is expected to weaken rapidly to a post-tropical system in coming days.

It is the fourth hurricane to make landfall in the US in the past two months.
