Nat cats take a holiday in January

January passed without any major natural disasters globally, according to Aon Benfield’s latest Global Catastrophe Recap report.

The report from Aon Benfield subsidiary Impact Forecasting, which analyses the natural disaster perils that occurred worldwide during January, found that there was no single major loss event last month.

But insurers and reinsurers were not immune from losses completely, with a series of smaller aggregated losses still impacting the industry.

Among these were windstorms in the UK and Scandinavia and winter storms in Japan and the US.

Severe weather, flooding and landslides also affected Indonesia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Brazil, Mozambique and South Africa during the month, and the report says La Nina still poses a threat for further heavy rainfall and tropical cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere during February.

Impact Forecasting President Steve Jakubowski says: “Following an extremely active 2011, this year has already seen an elevated number of natural disaster events. However, contrary to last year, 2012 has thus far lacked what we would term a significant event.”
