More British drivers use telematics covers

The UK had about 975,000 telematics-based insurance policies last year, up 30% on 2016, according to the British Insurance Brokers’ Association.

The association says the rise shows motorists, especially younger ones, continue to warm to innovative covers that reduce premiums by using new technology.

“It’s fantastic to see technology having such a positive effect,” Executive Director Graeme Trudgill said.

“A high proportion of telematics policies are bought by young drivers who can really benefit from the feedback on their driving behaviours that these devices give them, and take more control over their own premium.”

So-called black box devices, used to monitor a driver’s on-road behaviour, account for 90% of telematics-based policies, with the remaining 10% using apps and onboard diagnostics.
