Meteorite damage ‘is usually covered’

Policyholders are generally covered for damage caused by meteors such as the one that exploded over Russia last week, catastrophe modeller AIR Worldwide says.

The meteor exploded over Russia’s central Ural Mountains, causing damage to buildings in six cities.

Most damage was caused by shock waves as the meteor broke up in the atmosphere. The force of the explosion was enough to shatter dishes, televisions and windows and injured hundreds of people.

At least 3000 homes and businesses sustained damage from broken glass, AIR Worldwide says.

It says developed insurance markets usually have comprehensive multi-peril policies that cover all risks not specifically excluded, which would include meteorite damage.

If damage from falling objects is not listed in homeowner policy exclusions, it is generally covered, AIR Worldwide says.
