Levene signs on again as Names re-emerge

Lloyd’s Council has re-elected Lord Levene as Chairman for an unprecedented third term.

The decision comes after changes to the market’s governing legislation in November. Lord Levene says that after helping Lloyd’s through “major transformation in the past three years”, he is looking forward to the future.

Meanwhile, a growing number of private investors are helping provide underwriting capital to Lloyd’s – a reversal of the trend over the past few years, where Lloyd’s has been anxious to move away from and attract corporate rather than private capital from “Names”.

Alistair Wood, Head of Research at Hampden Agencies, one of the three member agencies responsible for channelling private money into the Lloyd’s market, says he is talking to a number of insurers who are interested in raising private capital this way.

Amlin investor Sir Adam Ridley, who has been a Name since 1977, says improving circumstances in the Lloyd’s market in the past few months make it quite attractive.

And Michael Deeny, Chairman of the Association of Lloyd’s Members, says even Names that have resigned have been calling and expressing their interest in returning to the market.
