Lane brings flood threat to Hawaii

Hurricane Lane, the third-wettest tropical cyclone in US history, dumped at least 100cm of rain on Hawaii, triggering fears of severe flooding.

One area on the Big Island received more than 120cm of rainfall, according to the Weather Channel.

The formerly Category 5 storm is moving away from Hawaii, but a plume of moisture means the threat of heavy rain persists.

“Even though Lane has weakened, rain is still a threat,” Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Brock Long tweeted.

Catastrophe modellers are still assessing the damage as emergency services continue recovery efforts.
