Japanese life insurers placed on watch

Five major Japanese life insurers – Asahi Mutual, Meiji, Mitsui Mutual, Sumitomo and Yasuda Mutual – have been placed on credit watch by Standard and Poor’s. The move reflects increasing concerns over capitalisation levels within these organisations. The five insurers have been adversely affected by their relatively high exposure to a volatile stock market and the long-running weaknesses of the Japanese economy.
