Japanese insurers seek earthquake premium rise

Japanese property and casualty insurers have requested permission to raise earthquake insurance premiums by an average of 15.5%.

If the increase is approved by the Financial Services Agency it will take effect from April next year.

It would be only the third rise in the industry’s history, following jumps in 1980 and 1996.

The request follows a review of potential damage from future events following the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.
