IPCC finalises global warming mitigation report

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has released its full report on mitigation, arguing immediate action is needed to keep global warming in check.

The mitigation working group’s entry in the Fifth Assessment Report says growing amounts of greenhouse gases are being pumped into the atmosphere, despite efforts to reduce them.

To limit global warming to two degrees, a substantial reduction of emissions is required across all sectors of the global economy.

The report presents a range of potential mitigation pathways.

Without additional efforts, surface temperatures are likely to rise about four degrees by 2100, it says. Delaying action beyond 2030 will substantially increase the difficulty of restricting the rise to two degrees, and will narrow the range of options.

“We need a broad portfolio of technologies ranging from renewables, carbon capture and storage, nuclear power, energy efficiency improvements and the transformation of almost all the sectors,” working group co-chairman Ottmar Edenhofer said.
