Indonesia quake death toll set to soar

At least 800 people are confirmed dead from the magnitude-7.5 quake and ensuing tsunami that struck Indonesia’s Palu city at the weekend.

The death toll is set to rise as the desperate search for survivors continues, according to international news reports.

President Joko Widodo has accepted offers of aid and other disaster relief from the global community as his country seeks to step up the rescue efforts.

The quake struck off the island of Sulawesi on Friday, triggering a tsunami with waves as high as six metres.

The Red Cross estimates more than 1.6 million people have been affected by the quake.

Loss estimates of the quake are not yet available.
