Hurricane bill hits $285 billion

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria caused a combined $US220 billion ($285 billion) in economic losses, estimates by Impact Forecasting show.

The Aon Benfield subsidiary, which issued three recap reports on the Atlantic hurricanes, estimates the loss from Harvey at $US100 billion ($130 billion).

“Harvey broke the historical record for the maximum rainfall total caused by a tropical cyclone over the US mainland,” Impact says. “The vast majority of the historic losses caused by Harvey resulted from the catastrophic flooding in the Houston metro area… as multiple rivers crested at record levels and reservoirs overflowed.”

Harvey is the second-costliest natural disaster in US history, behind Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Irma caused about $US55 billion ($71 billion) in economic losses and Maria left a $US65 billion ($84 billion) bill, Impact’s reports show.
