Fraud investigators call for arms

Louisiana insurance fraud investigators may carry guns in future following the slaying of two investigators last week.

Suspended insurance agent John Lavergne, 67, shot Kim Sledge and Rhett Jeansonne during an inspection of his files before killing himself.

State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says he has promised the dead officers’ families “this will never happen again” and that investigators may carry weapons in the future.

The investigators were killed while retrieving files from the office of Lavergne, who was facing several charges of fraudulently providing false proof of insurance and prohibited and unfair trade practices.
