Dodgy US claims go through the roof
Tough economic conditions in the US are driving some dramatic rises in insurance fraud this year, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).
A report on the first quarter of shows questionable claims on hail damage are up 407%, dodgy slip-and-falls up 77% and suspicious car fires up 27% compared with the corresponding period last year.
Among the reports coming from insurers is the increasing tendency for Americans whose roofs have been damaged in hailstorms to extensively damage more shingles in the hope of getting a new roof.
The NICB says car “give-ups” are up 24%. In such cases, car owners struggling with repayments drive their vehicle to a remote area and abandon it, report it stolen and make a claim.
