Dire prediction for US hurricane season
Colorado State University researchers have predicted nine hurricanes will form during this year’s Atlantic hurricane season – three above the annual norm.
Some 17 named storms are expected to develop in the region between June and December, incorporating nine hurricanes and five intense hurricanes that sustain winds above 179 kmh.
In an average year just two or three intense hurricanes form.
The university research broadly concurs with forecasts from the US government’s climate agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It has forecast between 14 and 18 named storms and between seven and 10 hurricanes, of which between three and six may develop into intense storms.
