Dark skies for US hurricane season

US scientists aren’t downgrading their earlier predictions that the US in for an active Atlantic hurricane season in the northern summer, with at least 13 named storms expected during the six-month period.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency of the US Commerce Department, is predicting a 75% chance this year’s hurricane season will be “above normal”.

It says at least seven and up to 10 hurricanes are expected to be Category 3 strength or greater.

On average, the Atlantic hurricane season brings 11 named storms, with six becoming hurricanes. Each season, running from June 1 to November 30, brings about two major hurricanes.
